Let's Meet, Face to Face!
What do First Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach and St. Patrick's Cathedral of New York City have in common (other than the obvious: An incredible music program!)?
We're both on Facebook!
We launched our Facebook page in the fall of 2010, after Associate Pastor Eme Asztalos and I attended a conference on social networking in congregations, sponsored by Columbia theological Seminary in Decatur, GA.
Facebook is a ministry of presence. It is a fast and efficient way of sharing news. We had more than 200 visitors to our Facebook page in the first few days of its existence.
-- After reading about our youth attending Disney's Night of Joy, Carol White Wood wrote a note on our page saying that her participation in our youth group was a "wonderful experience for me as a youth," adding that she met her husband, Tom Wood (who became a Presbyterian minister), in that group 45 years ago.
-- Marta Takacs, a former area resident, was delighted to happen upon our page and has posted a few messages -- an opportunity to practice her English (she and her husband moved back to Hungary after living here for a few years. They attended English classes at the church, as well as the Hungarian worship services and dinners.
-- Liz Bumgarner, our former church secretary, and Pastor Liz Hughes, who lives in Northern Ireland and exchanged pulpits with our former pastor, Bob Gamble, a few years back, have also popped up on our Facebook "radar," in addition to many other former and current members. Still others have come across our page and lingered to check us out.
It's a great way to stay in touch, so be a visitor ... then, become a "Friend"!
Just go to www.facebook.com and either sign in if you're a member, or sign on (it's quick -- and safe).
